Roy Morgan Australian Made Country of Origin – May 2021
Demand for Australian-made products increased in 2020, and is expected to grow.
The latest consumer research data from Roy Morgan shows the preference for Australian-made goods increased 6% in 2020, over the previous year, with 93% of Australians affirming they are more likely to buy products made in Australia.
Roy Morgan Chief Executive Officer, Michele Levine, said Australian-made goods enjoyed a surge in popularity in 2020 as COVID-19 restricted international travel.
Ms Levine said, “Australian-made products have experienced a surge in popularity during 2020 with a large majority of 93% of Australians more likely to buy a product that is ‘made in Australia’, up 6% points from 2019. Less than 1% of Australians say they are less likely to buy a product that is ‘made in Australia’ unchanged on a year ago.
The closure of international borders and restrictions on travel around the world appears to have helped increase support for Australian-made goods.
Although the preference for Australian-made goods is very high across all age groups, it is Baby Boomers (96%) and Generation X (94%) who are even more likely to prefer Australian-made products than other generations.”
Australian Made Logo
Australian Made Chief Executive, Ben Lazzaro, said Roy Morgan’s latest research comes as no surprise.
Mr Lazzaro said, “Australia’s over-reliance on imported products has been highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research shows Australians are placing priority on manufacturing self-sufficiency and job creation along with a renewed appetite to address the imbalance between locally made and imported products to ensure Australia’s long-term prosperity.

Commonwealth Bank Consumer Insights
In the inaugural edition of the CommBank Consumer Insights Report, conducted in January 2021, the research shows more Australians are choosing to shop locally, supporting local online retailers and manufacturers.
Commonwealth Bank’s Executive Manager, Consumer and Diversified Industries, Jerry Macey, said: “It’s great to see consumers supporting local Australian businesses. We’ve seen Aussie businesses adapting to consumers’ changing needs and their customers have noticed. There is goodwill among customers and an overall perception that the retail experience has improved across online, in-store and delivery services.”
The report shows one in four consumers have increased their online purchases, with the biggest change in online shoppers’ activities during the pandemic being an increase in purchases made from Australian online retailers.
